Early this fall Chris and I were blessed with the opportunity to hunt in Wyoming for Pronghorn.  If I try and sum up this hunt with just a few words or statements I would be selling the hunt short.

Going into the hunt, I think both Chris and I expected, for lack of better terms, an easy hunt in comparison to our A typical pack in, pack out hunts.  Though logistically and miles burned on boots it was an easier hunt we soon realized it was not going to be the cake walk we anticipated.

Lesson number one learned.  When traveling the friendly skies via commercial flights when you get to camp check your sights!!  We knew this, this was not our first rodeo with the airlines and our rifles but, we failed ourselves by assuming everything appeared good to go and the first day of our hunt, it cost us nice pronghorn.

Lesson number two learned.  If you have a choice, pick the first or opening weekend of rifle season for these extremely fast, extremely Wiley critters.   By the second weekend they are alert and tuned in to what is going on with regards to their environment and they key in on the sight of a human or vehicle instantly and they are gone.

Lesson number three learned.  Shoot your rifle a lot.  Then shoot it some more.  Know your shooting limitations and distances!!  Regardless of all your temptations stay within those limitations or you will just make them more cagey.  And if you think you can hit a running pronghorn at full tilt, think again.  If you do, go buy a lottery ticket.  I made this mistake day two, led the buck by a full body length he was at 300yds and I was shooting a 3100fps rifle and I was an additional body length behind him.  Save your ammo in these situations.

All lesson’s learned, we highly recommend this hunt.  The landscape of eastern Wyoming is beautiful.  The plains stretch for miles and are broken up by gorgeous bluffs.  The folks are friendly and the hunt when complete regardless of your success will be memorable and rewarding.  Chris and I used Off Grid Outdoors for this hunt and we both highly recommend these folks or using a guide of some sort even if you are a savvy, experienced and, knowledgeable hunter.  Why?  Access!!  These folks lease thousands of acres of private land that will afford you the opportunity to see and harvest book bucks with little to no other hunting pressure.

Big thank you to Rusty, Lisa, Branden and Taylor of Off Grid for the hospitality, lodging and awesome hunting.
